The museum was established as the Hall of History in 1902, by Frederick Augustus Olds and his collection of items. By 1968, the museum collection grew to include over 91,000 items.

Exhibits include The Story of North Carolina, Real to Reel: The Making of Gone with the Wind, Greetings from North Carolina and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
