Appalachian State University

Sanford Mall at Appalachian State University

As you embark on your next visit to North Carolina, head for the northwest and check out Appalachian State University. Found in the town of Boone, Appalachian State University, or what is more commonly referred to as App State, is a public school founded in 1899.

By 1971, App State had grown large enough to be added to the University of North Carolina System – it's one of 17 schools spread around the entirety of NC. You can tour the App State campus with your soon-to-be high school graduate and check some highlights like Sanford Mall or Belk Library.

Drive in from nearby cities like Jefferson or Banner Elk and check out some of the college sports action App State provides. During the late summer and into the fall, be sure to catch an App State Mountaineers football game at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

Also known as The Rock, Kid Brewer Stadium seats 30,000 fans – be one on your next visit. During the late winter and into the spring, head for George M. Holmes Convocation Center for Mountaineer basketball games. 

Boone Golf Club

Opened in 1959, the Boone Golf Club is a favorite destination for local golfers – from the weekend warriors to the scratch. Visit the city of Boone as you explore western North Carolina – book your tee time at Boone Golf Club in advance to ensure your place on the links.

The Boone Golf Club, accessed easily from nearby Banner Elk, is a par 71, playing to a max length of 6,680 yards. The course feature an overall rating of 70.1, and a slope rating of 120. It was designed by Ellis Maples.

Holmes Center
