Bodie Island Lighthouse

Bodie Island Lighthouse

See the Bodie Island Lighthouse

It took a while to get today’s Bodie Island Lighthouse to stick around. It was built in a location where it was determined a lighthouse was necessary for navigation and protection from the dangerous cape.

The first lighthouse opened in 1847 but due to mistakes in construction had to be abandoned after 12 years. Another lighthouse opened in 1859, but Union troops blew it up during the Civil War.

Today’s Bodie Island Lighthouse opened in 1872 near Kill Devil Hills. Pronounced “body”, the lighthouse rises 156 feet and towers above the Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the North Carolina coast.

The grounds surrounding the lighthouse feature marshlands, maritime forest, ponds, and more that make for great bird and nature watching.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Tour the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in NC

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a Must See

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse protects one of the most treacherous parts of the Cape and of the North Carolina coast.

The first lighthouse went up here in 1803 but the realization of a taller light and new needs meant the current lighthouse opened in 1870 near Kill Devil Hills.

At 198 feet tall, it’s the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. The lighthouse was actually moved in 1999 to its current location, 1,500 feet from shore – as it originally was.

The Double Keepers’ Quarters, the Principal Keeper’s Quarters, the dwelling cisterns, and the oil house were all relocated with the lighthouse.

Don't forget to take in the breath-taking views at the top of Bodie Island Lighthouse and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse or take to the water at one of the many boat launching sites on NC-12.

Corolla Wild Horse Tours

Most of Corolla’s wild horses roam on a 7,500-acre refuge that includes Corolla's beach. Corolla Wild Horse Tours provides two-hour tours of their habitat in a 15-passenger open-air safari style truck.

Tours not only show and provide photography opportunities of the horses, but also a detailed history of the Corolla area near Kill Devil Hills and North Carolina beaches.

Currituck Lighthouse

Currituck Lighthouse

Currituck Lighthouse Along the NC Coast

Located right before Highway 12 runs out of pavement approaching the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge, the Currituck Lighthouse rises 162 feet above the surroundings.

About one million red bricks were used in its construction. It was the last major lighthouse built on the Outer Banks and serves navigation with an unusual pattern of 3 seconds on, 17 seconds off for its light. The light and flash sequence can be seen for 18 nautical miles.

You can check out museum-quality lighthouse exhibits at the base, with more on the landings, should you choose to head up the stairs. After 220 steps you’ll get a nice view from the top.

There is a small fee to climb, and kids 7 and under climb free. The lighthouse is generally open from late March through late November, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. near Kill Devil Hills.

Elizabethan Gardens

Operated by the Garden Club of North Carolina, the Elizabethan Gardens is part of the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on the North Carolina coast. Spanning 10 acres, the Elizabethan Gardens is a major attraction of the OBX area.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

The Roanoke Island story includes Native Americans who have settled here for many hundreds of years as well as one of the earliest English settlements in North America.

These were established with the efforts of Sir Walter Raleigh during the 1580's but eventually disappeared and was known as “The Lost Colony” near Kill Devil Hills.

The Fort Raleigh NHS features a visitor center with plenty of exhibits, a 17-minute film on the island’s history and settlement, and a restored earthworks fort.

Don't miss hiking trails through the maritime forest and to the Outer Banks beaches complete with wayside markers to illustrate the experiences of early settlers on the island, from the Native Americans to Sir Raleigh’s “Lost Colony” to the Freedman’s Colony established during the Civil War.

Graveyard of the Atlantic

Many a ship has wrecked off the North Carolina coast through history; it’s one of the reasons there are quite a few lighthouses along the Outer Banks. It’s also the reason this museum near Kill Devil Hills exists.  The focus is on shipwrecks and maritime history from the 1500's through 1945.

A more general history of seafaring and the Outer Banks region is also showcased in the museum, along with piracy, warfare, commerce, and even original lenses from some of the area lighthouses.

Jockey's Ridge State Park

Jockey's Ridge State Park in NC

Spend a Day at Jockey's Ridge State Park

Jockey’s Ridge features the tallest natural sand dune system along the Outer Banks and east coast, some of which top 80 feet.

There are plenty of recreation opportunities here, including a 384-foot boardwalk offering great views.

It’s a popular place for kite-flying, picnics, or even just rolling down the sand dunes.

A climb to the top of the dunes reveals a truly spectacular look at the islands, beaches, sounds, and surrounding areas near Kill Devil Hills.

North Carolina Aquarium

One of the official aquariums for the state of North Carolina, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island features the largest collection of sharks in the state. You’re not just looking at tanks here – you can touch alligators and feed stingrays while also checking out a multitude of other interactive exhibits.

The aquarium is located along U.S.64 in Manteo on Roanoke Island, just across from Kill Devil Hills and the Outer Banks.

Whalehead Club

This gracious mansion, constructed from 1922-1925, covers 21,000 square feet and is five stories high. The opulence of the mansion and the hunting club versus the rest of the Corolla residents who lived on a more subsistence level – and how they mixed - is explored in the museum within this Outer Banks mansion.

The entire grounds, including the mansion and the 39-acre beachfront estate, is open for tours six days a week (closed on Sundays), and there are several levels of tours, as well as special events near Kill Devil Hills throughout the year.
