Bank of America Stadium

Carolina Raptor Center

Gray Motorsports

Historic Latta Plantation

History buffs in the Charlotte area have a wonderful attraction to visit. The Historic Latta Plantation, located twenty miles north of Charlotte in Huntersville, was a working short-staple cotton plantation in the early 19th century. The plantation is included in the Latta Plantation Park, that encompasses fifty-seven acres along the shoreline of Mountain Island Lake. James and his wife Jane Knox Latta owned the plantation and lived in the 1800 home located on the grounds.

Be sure to schedule plenty of time, while at this living history museum. Tour the home museum to see the wonderful display of artifacts and stroll through the grounds to view the short-staple cotton grown on-site, the kitchen garden and the honeybee exhibit. Time your visit to watch the open hearth cooking and gold panning demonstrations and have fun meeting the farm animals. Joe Gibbs Racing

Located in Huntersville in North Carolina’s Piedmont region, Joe Gibbs Racing shop is the headquarters for some of NASCAR’s biggest names. The Joe Gibbs race shop has helped produce multiple NASCAR Sprint Cup championships since their inauguration in the year 2000.

Lake Norman State Park

Michael Waltrip Racing

Just north of Huntersville in the town of Cornelius, the Michael Waltrip Racing facility is open to the public for viewing Monday through Friday. During a MWR tour, race fans are treated to an actual viewing of racecar fabrication and assembly via up-close views on the shop’s catwalks.

Highlights of the tour consists of Machine Shops I and II, the Paint Booth, and Final Assembly. Moreover, tour-takers can view the Hauler Bay and Pit Practice Arena – the latter being where pit crews train and prepare for race day.

North Carolina Transportation Museum

Located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer gives visitors a look at the state’s extensive railroad history.  Moreover, the museum also features an extensive collection of antique cars and aircraft.

The museum is just outside of towns like Albemarie, Huntersville, and Statesville. Some of the exhibit highlights include about 30 locomotives, including names like the Doris and the Loretto, two private rail cars belonging to Charles M. Schwab and James B. Duke.

Penske Racing

Located in the Piedmont region, otherwise known as the epicenter of motorsports, the Penske Racing headquarters is a state-of-the-art racecar engineering facility in Mooresville. Aside from the typical race fan gift shop, the Penske Racing facility also lets fans traverse a 432-foot fan walk found above the garage floor.

NASCAR memorabilia and souvenirs are found along the 1,000 feet of graphics displaying the facility’s history in the halls. The facility, located just north of Huntersville, has helped give way to over 20 national championships for Team Penske since the mid 1900s.

Rowan Museum

Located in North Carolina’s Piedmont region, the Rowan Museum is a 19th century courthouse, preserved to showcase the history of Rowan County.  The Rowan Museum encompasses two other pre-Civil War era sites, including the Old Stone House and Utzman-Chambers House.

The Rowan Museum offers group tours, displaying numerous artifacts and antebellum architecture. The Rowan Museum Messinger Room can host special events, ideal for weddings, business meetings, or any other type of get-together at the Rowan Museum.

Time Warner Cable Arena

When the NBA season in Charlotte is in full effect, head for the Time Warner Cable Arena and check out a Charlotte Bobcats game. Opened in 2005, Time Warner Cable Arena was originally known as the Charlotte Bobcats Arena up until 2008, and has been Time Warner Cable Arena ever since. Found in the heart of downtown Charlotte, Time Warner Cable Arena is, in fact, the home of the Charlotte Bobcats, but it also hosts a wide range of events throughout the year – live music, staged performances, and even the circus.

When you're visiting the Piedmont region and find yourself in Charlotte, your fall, winter, or spring visit should be met with some Bobcats basketball. The NBA season tips off in October and plays through May of the following year. If basketball isn't your jam, Time Warner Cable Arena can expand seating from around 19,000 (for basketball games) to nearly 21,000 for staged events, like concerts and pro wrestling.
