North Carolina Museum of Art
Museums of all shapes, sizes, and subjects abound in North Carolina. Set in cities like Charlotte, Greensboro, and especially Raleigh, the art collections, history exhibits, and science centers of the Tar Heel State are definitely worth a visit.
North Carolina’s capital and second largest city, Raleigh is home to Duke University and most of North Carolina’s official museums.
The 164-acre North Carolina Museum of Art offers more than 40 galleries spanning over 5,000 years of art. Browse through works of African, European, American and contemporary art, or stroll along two miles of walking trail at the onsite art park – featuring the Joseph M. Bryan, Jr., Theater during the summer.
Set in downtown Raleigh, the free North Carolina Museum of History features the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, plus North Carolina military history and arts.
Also in downtown Raleigh, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is the state’s oldest museum, and most popular attraction. Established in 1879, the Museum of Natural Sciences is a four-story collection of North Carolina-specific biology and history, ranging from prehistoric NC to present day.
Check out the Arthropod Zoo on the fourth floor, the Discovery Room on the second floor, and exhibits like Mountains to the Sea, Coastal North Carolina, and Prehistoric North Carolina throughout the museum – plus the short film Wilderness North Carolina shown in the first floor’s 250-seat auditorium.
If you're visiting the Triad Cities, Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city, features the Charlotte Museum of History – accompanied by the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite and even the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
