During the fall and through to the spring, head for Cameron Indoor Stadium – you won't want to miss exciting college basketball action. Durham is Blue Devils country after all.
UNC-Chapel Hill, less than 13 miles southwest of Duke, is another wildly popular school. Helped heavily by a long list of successful and nationally famous sports programs, UNC, also known as the Tar Heels, is home to The Old Well.
UNC was established in 1789, making it the first public university in the US. On your exploration of Chapel Hill, plan to visit the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. Visit from nearby Cary or Creedmoor.
In the northwest of NC you can enjoy the pleasantly wooded backdrops of the Appalachians with a visit to the town of Boone, home of Appalachian State University.
Commonly referred to as App State or ASU, Appalachian State University yields excellent and swift access to Howard Knob mountain, an ideal destination for a day of hiking and backpacking. You'll find Boone in between Banner Elk and Jefferson.
On the opposite end of the state, discover Wilmington, a charming and diverse coastal NC city. You can tour the University of North Carolina-Wilmington or check out the Battleship North Carolina for an informative and fun afternoon.
And during the spring and early summer, visits to Legion Stadium yield terrific soccer action, as it's home to the Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL.
