Explore Duke and the Surrounding Highlights
Visit the Campus of Duke University
In the Piedmont region of North Carolina, you'll find the city of Durham is crazy for the Blue Devils. Duke University draws visitors from nearby and afar – cities like Creedmoor and Cary yield a short drive.
During the fall and into the spring, many visitors enjoy visits to Cameron Indoor Stadium for Duke basketball games, while campus tours are a year round affair.
A private university, Duke features a sprawling, urban campus near downtown Durham. Founded in 1838, Duke has established itself over the years as a premier institution of higher learning.
Originally founded as the Brown School in 1838, it wasn't until 1924 when James B. Duke, a tobacco and electric industrialist, established The Duke Endowment when the school changed the name to Duke University.
You can visit Duke and enjoy an informative campus tour, taking your around to see the Duke Chapel, which seats nearly 1,600 people, the James B. Duke Statue, and even the Sarah P. Duke Gardens.
Sprawled across 55 acres, the Sarah P. Duke Gardens features five miles of walkways and paths, making it an ideal way to spend an afternoon. There are four distinct areas at the Sarah P. Duke Gardens – the H.L. Blomquist Garden of Native Plants, the William Louis Culberson Asiatic Arboretum, the Historic Core and Terraces, and the Doris Duke Center Gardens.
Ideal during your spring or summer visit to the Duke campus, the Duke Lemur Center is another campus highlight. Founded as a way to "promote research and understanding of pro-simians," the Duke Lemur Center is home to the world's largest colony of endangered primates.
Not far from campus you'll find the Museum of Life and Science, a sterling example of education, science and fun. With a slew of hands-on exhibits perfect for the kids, the Museum of Life and Science in Durham should be a part of any visit you make to the area – plan on checking it out after your Duke campus tour is complete.
Duke University Blue Devils are wildly popular across the country when it comes to their sports teams. The men's basketball team, in particular, have helped make Duke a national brand. During the Fall, throughout the winter and into the spring, your visit to Durham should be met with trips to the Cameron Indoor Stadium.
