Visiting the North Carolina Mountains

A little winter weather never stopped the people of the North Carolina Mountains. Outdoor fun abounds at destinations like Cherokee National Forest and Nantahala National Forest, and communities from Banner Elk to Murphy as welcoming as ever, staging a variety of special events, festivals, and kid-friendly activities to help you embrace what’s left of the cold.

The gentle slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains are especially gorgeous when dressed in their white winter coat. What better way to see their breathtaking beauty first hand than by embarking on a scenic driving tour? Travel along the Blue Ridge Parkway – the views are unmatched and towns like Waynesville and Maggie Valley promise plenty to stop and see along the way.

Maggie Valley is also set to host the 2016 Winterfest Smokey Style, February 26th through 28th. The annual winter-themed favorite features sled dog races, local reality star appearances, winter photo displays and competitions, music, and all sorts of specialty food offerings.

In the mean time, Thomas Wolfe Auditorium offers Asheville visitors a variety of edifying entertainment this season. Check out the Asheville Symphony when they give a one-night-only performance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto on February 13th.

Those in search of a little more arts and culture look to Waynesville, April 22nd through May 8th, when the Performing Arts Center hosts a live production of The Winter’s Tale. Showings of the retelling of this Shakespearian tale typically run weekend nights at 7:30 p.m., with matinees on Sunday at 2 p.m.

If it’s high-octane action you’re after, head back to Maggy Valley for the 2016 Southeastern Mini Truckin’ Nationals at the Maggie Valley Festival Grounds. Held April 23rd and 24th, the event sees the top mini truck racers from around the country compete for a variety of prizes. Come down for the races and stay for the fan fare – the festivities feature hundreds of mini-trucks on display, award ceremonies, giveaways, and the Drag 'N Cruise at the end of the weekend.
